ScrapHAUS for the Greenville Humane Society

A few months ago I read an email request from the Greenville Humane Society asking for architects to design and build a “Bowhouse” to be auctioned for their cause.  I wasn’t sure I could fit it into the work schedule and I knew that I didn’t have the tools anymore, thanks to Katrina, to build it myself.  Since Tess has no opposable thumbs, she wouldn’t be much help either.  So I sadly deleted the email, thinking maybe next year.

Alas, there is a pretty cool group of landscape architects at Seamon Whiteside who have opened a residential landscape architecture studio, High Res Studio.  They were thinking nearly the same thing, but more like we need to find someone to team up with to make it happen.  Thankfully they thought of me!  After a few cups of coffee and a bit of conversation about what salvaged materials Blake Sanders had available, I put pen to paper.

After four working days, three cans of paint, a few more of beer, and with the weather holding out we were able to pull it off.  This is a three season house with loads of natural ventilation.  It is constructed nearly entirely of salvaged materials, with the most noteable exceptions being the connectors.  There is enough room inside for a large LL Bean dog bed and for a 65 pound pup to sit upright inside.  The east wall is nicely screened with grassy plant material and, thanks to Clint Rigsby, the front stoop is adorned with a carved pumpkin.  We certainly hope that you like it and will consider the Greenville Humane Society’s cause by bidding on the ScrapHAUS.  The animals and staff will greatly appreciate it!
