Can the process really be standard?

Wandering through the local Barnes & Noble bookstore, sorry to the small bookshop lovers it was truly convenient this day, I recently discovered that they no longer have a section on Architecture.  This was quite disturbing on many levels because it had been replaced by Home Renovations and Decorating.  Further frustrations prevailed when even in this section there were no books by architects, on architects or architecture, but filled in with Interior Designers, Interior Decorators and the likes of style books by Kathy Ireland and Paula Deen?  Don’t get me wrong style advice on bathing suits from Kathy would be fine with me, and I could probably use it.  And I would certainly love to hear from Paula about how much extra butter to add to my pound cake to make it mouth watering.  However, when did either woman become an expert or reliable source for home stylings?  I think this is a sure sign that I am correct in my re-evaluation of how I work within this profession, and the reason I am tailoring all types of design and construction administration services to each client.  And I promise not to offer clothing design advice to anyone, though I may recommend a good Black Bean Hummus recipe.

This is why I love and hate the HG channel. Everyone thinks that it’s a quick and easy process, that great design…and amazing 3D models…can come at the blink of an eye and with the mere opening of an iPad. As for Barnes and Noble, I knew this day was coming when the “architecture section” was reduced to a mere shelf or two with multiple commemorative books for famous architects from the turn of the 19 th century crammed together with no clear separation between them based on topic or style. Architects just aren’t seen as popular anymore, but as reserved for the rich and their occasional commissions, much like artists. I fear that the future of the profession is going to be in our reliance on contractors to hire us for fast paced design build rather than lengthy, personal, and thoughtful customization.
